February is Black History Month, a time to reflect on the profound contributions African Americans have made to our country and to our shared history. These contributions are not limited to one month or one chapter in a textbook. They are central to who we are as a nation.
At a time when there are increasing efforts to simplify or homogenize the story of our country, it is especially important that we provide our students with a fuller and more honest understanding of history. Progress has never been automatic. It has been driven by individuals and communities who challenged injustice, expanded opportunity, and worked to create a more inclusive future.
African American history is essential to that understanding. From the struggle to end slavery, to the leadership of the Civil Rights Movement, to the countless contributions in education, science, the arts, and public service, African Americans have helped shape a nation rooted in hope and possibility.
As educators and as a community, we have a responsibility to ensure students see themselves reflected in what they learn and to help all students understand the richness of the many cultures that make up our country. When students engage with diverse perspectives, they build empathy, critical thinking, and a deeper sense of belonging.
