Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Reflecting on Our Equity Journey Together

As we approach the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, I am grateful for the progress we have made in our district’s equity work over the past three years and mindful that this work is ongoing. Dr. King challenged our nation to move beyond words toward action, and his legacy continues to call us to build systems that reflect dignity, belonging, and opportunity for every student.

This week, we conducted an equity walk at Dana Gray Elementary School. Members of our Board of Trustees, district leadership, a parent, and staff participated. Equity walks help us look closely at the student experience and examine how our environments, practices, and decisions align with our shared commitments.

Over the past three years, our district has taken important steps to strengthen equitable access and outcomes, including:

  • Engaging the Board in Governance through an Equity Lens training

  • Forming an Anti-Bias Committee

  • Creating an equity statement

  • Supporting leadership with equity coaching

  • Providing teacher training in equitable practices

  • Engaging in a book study focused on cultural proficiency

Dr. King said, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character, that is the goal of true education.”

As we head into this weekend, I invite each of us to reflect on the commitments we have made to ensure students have equitable access to the great liberator, education. This reflection is not about perfection. It is about continued growth, shared responsibility, and the daily choices we make in service of students.

Please take a moment to watch this short video as part of our reflection:

Thank you for your ongoing commitment to this work and to the students and families we serve.
