Celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month: Resources for All Grade Levels

National Hispanic Heritage Month (observed in the U.S. from September 15 – October 15) is a powerful time to honor the histories, cultures, achievements, and contributions of Hispanic, Latino, Latinx, and Latin American communities. These resources are intended to help educators across grade levels bring meaningful, accurate, and engaging content into their classrooms.

1. National Hispanic Heritage Month — Teacher Resources

  • What it offers: Virtual exhibits, primary sources, audio/video, stories of Hispanic and Latino achievements, bilingual materials, and lesson guides.

  • Why it’s useful for all grades: The materials are organized by theme and include both history and culture, so you can adapt for younger students (focusing on story, art, identity) or older students (primary source analysis, historical context).

2. NEA (National Education Association) — Hispanic Heritage Month Resources

  • What it offers: Curated lessons, videos, books, and activities across grade bands (K-5, 6-8, 9-12).

  • Sample ideas:
“Latino Americans: Share Their Experiences” — profiles of Latinos who overcame obstacles to succeed.
    • Art and dance lesson plans, and cultural holiday comparisons.

  • How to use: Great for classroom discussion, coverage of non-fiction topics, or cross-curricular work (e.g., combining history, language arts, or arts).

3. Colorín Colorado — Booklists, Classroom Activities, and ELL Support

  • What it offers: More than 50 booklists for children and teens (many bilingual or by Latino/a/x authors), plus lesson plans, multimedia resources, and multilingual learner friendly materials.

  • Why it’s strong: Excellent support for students whose home language is Spanish, helps ensure representation in literature, and gives ideas for differentiated literacy work.
