As many of you know, the district and site leaders are planning for next school year. We are looking at the budget along with the proposed budget that has been released by the governor. There are many unknowns at this point in the process. However, I would like to provide you with information on our approach to the budget and what implications there are at this point in the process.

FBUSD must cut at least $750,000 from our budget for the 2025-2026 school year. I have worked with our business department to identify at least half of that amount in existing funds, grants, and other funding sources that will ensure the jobs paid for with these funds can continue.

A large portion of our budget is used to pay for personnel salary and benefits. We added many positions over the course of the last few years using the COVID relief funds provided by the federal and state governments. Unfortunately, these funds are coming to an end. This means we will inevitably have to make some reductions in positions to ensure the continued financial health of the district.
The budget committee will meet for the first time on January 22. This committee will make recommendations to the administration regarding possible budget cuts. As we move forward with these tough decisions, we will do everything we can to ensure that existing personnel can be accommodated within the district.

I am committing to the following in the budget process.

1. We will make every effort to identify cuts that do not affect instruction, student health and safety, or the ability for school sites to function.
2. Whenever possible, any cuts to positions will start with vacant positions so there is no direct effect on employees and their lives.
3. If we cannot avoid cutting a position that does affect an employee, we will make every effort to find another position in the district for the employee.

With these commitments in place, I hope that you can rest easy. The roles within the district may look different next year, but we will do everything we can to support our FBUSD staff in remaining with the district and in support of our students.

Please feel free to reach out to me with any questions or concerns about this process. Thank you.
Joe
